The quadratic stains
have lodged like diplomats
on our whispering wind.

They burn through immunity
with logic; there is
no piper to lead us to reason

and it makes me wonder
"I have brought a word."

The manager looked at the oddly-dressed woman in the doorway.

He felt himself drawn into eyes he would later remember as having been of no particular color, though there was something of gold about them. When he spoke at last, it was in the voice of someone he had never met.

"Madame, I'm afraid we are closing. In fact, all the stores are now closing."

"Oh, but you see, I have a word."

And then an odd, persistent humming started up in his head...

The strangeness plays off the familiarity to produce something entirely
new and a bit haunting. I'd have to say it makes me wonder too, at the
effectiveness of the subtle technique that underlies the simplicity of the
words. Brava, Emma.
